A rotary table bearing is a combined axial-radial bearing designed to support a rotating table or spindle under load from more than one direction at once. In a single unit, it carries radial load, axial load from both directions, and the tilting moment created when load is applied off center. This is why one bearing can replace what would otherwise need two or three separate bearing arrangements stacked together.
Because rotary tables carry cutting forces, workpiece weight, and tilting moments simultaneously, a standard ball or roller bearing on its own cannot hold the accuracy a CNC machine needs. Rotary table bearings solve this with an internal layout built specifically for that combined loading.
These series share the same mounting dimensions, so a machine designer can switch between them without redesigning the shaft and housing. The difference is in what happens inside the bearing.
YRT series uses three rows of rollers: two rows of axial cylindrical rollers and one row of radial cylindrical rollers. It is preloaded before shipping, so no clearance adjustment is needed at assembly. This series suits low to moderate-speed applications where rigidity and load capacity matter more than top speed, such as indexing tables and swivel milling heads.
YRTS series shares the YRT layout but with a cage-guided roller set instead of a full-complement set. That change lowers internal friction and raises the limiting speed, which makes YRTS the better fit for direct-drive rotary axes and applications that run continuously at higher rpm.
ZKLDF series replaces the rollers with two sets of angular contact balls at a 60-degree contact angle. It runs faster than either YRT or YRTS and handles high axial and radial loads well, though its overturning rigidity is lower than the roller-based series. ZKLDF fits torque motor spindles and high-speed direct-drive applications.
YRTM and YRTSM series are the YRT and YRTS designs fitted with an integrated angular measuring system. Instead of relying on an external encoder, the position feedback is built into the bearing itself, which shortens assembly time and improves closed-loop positioning accuracy on rotary axes and indexing plates.
Rotary table bearings are supplied in defined precision classes, commonly from P5 down to P2 for the tightest tolerances. Runout, axial play, and rotational accuracy all tighten as the grade increases. Machine tool spindles and measuring equipment generally call for P4 or better, while general indexing and positioning tables can often run on P5. Choosing the right grade matters because over-specifying adds cost without adding usable accuracy, and under-specifying shows up directly as positioning error on the finished part.
Rotary table bearings are the standard choice wherever a rotating axis needs to hold both position and load accuracy at once. Typical applications include CNC rotary tables and swivel heads, indexing heads and dividing tables, direct-drive torque motor axes, gear hobbing and gear measuring machines, coordinate measuring machines, and rotary stages in robotics and automation equipment.
LYDL Bearings supplies YRT, YRTS, YRTM and ZKLDF series to manufacturers building or servicing this kind of rotary axis, with bore sizes and precision grades matched to the application rather than sold off a single fixed spec sheet.
Not every rotary axis uses a rolling-element bearing. Hydrostatic bearings float the rotating table on a thin film of pressurized oil, and air bearings do the same with pressurized air instead of oil. Both remove metal-to-metal contact entirely, which gives extremely smooth rotation with no rolling friction, and they’re used where vibration and micro-level surface finish matter more than anything else, such as some diamond turning or ultra-precision grinding setups.
The tradeoff is that both need a constant supply system, oil or air, along with the pumps, filtration and plumbing to support it. That adds cost, complexity, and maintenance that a rolling-element rotary table bearing doesn’t need. For the large majority of CNC rotary tables, indexing heads and direct-drive axes, a YRT, YRTS or ZKLDF bearing delivers the accuracy and rigidity required without a supporting fluid system, which is why they remain the standard choice across machine tool building.
A few questions narrow the selection down quickly. If the axis runs at low to moderate speed and rigidity is the priority, YRT is usually the starting point. If the same axis needs to run continuously at higher speed, YRTS is the better match. If the application is a high-speed torque motor spindle, ZKLDF tends to fit best. If the design needs built-in angular feedback without adding a separate encoder, YRTM or YRTSM removes that extra step. Bore size, load direction, expected speed, and required precision grade should all be confirmed before final selection, and our team can work through these with you against your actual drawing or application data.
