XV40 Crossed Roller Bearing Overview
XV40 crossed roller bearing is a sealed, grease-lubricated precision bearing with a 40 mm bore, 85 mm outside diameter and 15 mm overall width. Its crossed cylindrical rollers allow one compact bearing position to support radial load, axial load from both directions and overturning moment.
The XV40 has a solid outer ring with 12 counterbored fixing holes on a 70 mm pitch circle for direct mounting. Its circumferentially split inner ring can be located and adjusted with a precision locknut, allowing the installed clearance or preload to be matched to the required rigidity and rotational torque.
Positioned between XV30 and XV50, XV40 is suitable for 40 mm shaft interfaces in industrial robot joints, precision gearboxes, optical inspection systems, medical positioning equipment and compact rotary modules. Other available sizes can be found on the XV Series Cross Roller Bearings page.
The figures above are reference catalog values. Final dimensions, tolerances, accuracy, clearance or preload, lubricant and inspection requirements must be confirmed by the approved LYDL drawing and purchase order.
The limiting speeds are reference values rather than automatically permissible continuous operating speeds. Actual speed capability depends on load, preload, lubrication, mounting accuracy, heat dissipation and operating cycle.
XV40 Structure and Main Advantages
Solid Outer Ring with Fixing Holes
The solid outer ring can be screwed directly to a gearbox housing, mounting plate or machine structure. This can eliminate a separate outer-ring clamping flange and reduce the number of surrounding components.
The mounting surface must provide adequate flatness and rigidity. Uneven surfaces or irregular screw tightening can distort the outer ring and affect running accuracy and rotational torque.
Split Inner Ring with Locknut Adjustment
The split inner ring is normally located by a shaft shoulder and secured with a suitable precision locknut. The locknut arrangement allows the installed clearance or preload to be adjusted according to the application.
A generic locknut tightening torque alone cannot accurately define preload. The installed condition should be verified using an approved clearance, displacement or rotational-torque measurement procedure.
Combined Load Support
The rollers are arranged alternately at 90 degrees in precision-ground raceways. This enables XV40 to carry radial, bidirectional axial and overturning moment loads simultaneously.
Sealed and Grease Lubricated
The standard configuration is sealed on both sides and supplied with grease, helping protect the raceways against contamination and lubricant loss during normal operation.
Compared with the XV30 Crossed Roller Bearing, XV40 increases the bore and outside diameter by 10 mm while retaining the same 15 mm overall width. It also provides a higher static axial load rating.
XV50 offers greater load capacity but requires a 50 mm bore, 100 mm outside diameter and 17 mm overall width. XV40 is the intermediate choice when a 40 mm shaft interface and compact axial dimensions are required.

Load, Speed and Preload Selection
XV40 should not be selected using only one catalog load rating. The complete evaluation should include:
Radial and axial loads
Overturning moment
Load eccentricity
Continuous rotation or oscillating motion
Speed and acceleration
Shock and vibration
Required service life
Required positioning accuracy
Mounting-surface rigidity
Fixing-screw capacity
Lubrication and temperature
Preload can reduce internal play and improve rigidity, but excessive preload may increase rotational torque, temperature and sensitivity to mounting errors. It can also reduce the allowable operating speed and grease life.
For servo positioning axes, preload should be matched to motor torque, acceleration and reversing frequency. For optical or measuring equipment, smooth motion and torque consistency may be more important than selecting the highest possible preload.
If mounting holes are required in both the inner and outer rings and locknut adjustment is not needed, the RU Series Cross Roller Bearings may offer a more suitable mounting structure.
Low temperature, low torque or special environments
XV40 OEM version
Customized marking and packaging
Machinery manufacturers and distributors
RL0, VSP and RR are commonly used reference suffixes, but their precise definitions are not universal across manufacturers. Preload level, corrosion-resistant treatment, grease and accuracy requirements must be confirmed on the LYDL quotation and drawing.
P5, P4 and P2 should be treated as technical accuracy requirements. The drawing should identify the inspection characteristics, reference datums, tolerances and acceptance method.
Materials and Customization
Standard LYDL XV40 bearings can be produced using high-carbon chromium bearing steel equivalent to GCr15, 100Cr6 or SAE 52100, subject to the confirmed manufacturing specification.
Available requirements can include:
Standard, P5, P4 or P2 accuracy
Specified clearance or preload
Controlled rotational torque
Application-specific grease
Corrosion-resistant treatment
Customer-specific laser marking
OEM labels and packaging
Dimensional and accuracy reports
Batch or serial-number traceability
The final accuracy of the machine depends on both the bearing and the surrounding components. Shaft geometry, shoulder perpendicularity, mounting-surface flatness, housing rigidity and locknut accuracy should therefore be controlled together.
Manufacturing and Inspection
LYDL manufacturing controls can include precision turning, heat treatment, dimensional stabilization, raceway grinding, superfinishing, roller sorting, cleaning, controlled assembly and grease filling.
XV40 inspection can cover:
Bore, outside diameter and ring widths
Mounting-hole diameter and pitch-circle position
Counterbore diameter and depth
Radial and axial runout
End-face parallelism
Internal clearance or preload
Starting and running torque
Seal and grease condition
Appearance, marking and traceability
For robot joints and gearbox output supports, the running-accuracy datum should be related to the actual mounting surfaces. Available documentation can include dimensional reports, material certificates, Certificates of Conformity, accuracy records, torque data and lubricant information.
XV40 Installation Recommendations
Confirm the bearing orientation, shaft shoulder and locknut arrangement using the approved drawing.
Clean the bearing seats, mounting surface, screws and locknut.
Remove burrs and raised edges from all locating surfaces.
Apply installation force through the ring being fitted, not through the rollers.
Install all 12 outer-ring screws finger-tight before final tightening.
Tighten the screws gradually in a diagonal or crosswise sequence.
Adjust the split inner ring using the specified shoulder and precision locknut.
Verify clearance or preload using the approved measurement method.
Recheck runout, rotational torque and free movement after assembly.
The screw size, strength grade, engagement length and tightening torque must follow the approved machine drawing. The bearing-hole dimensions should not be used as the only basis for fastener selection.
Lubrication and Operating Conditions
The standard XV40 is sealed on both sides and grease lubricated. Its reference temperature range is −30°C to +80°C.
Continuous rotary applications should be evaluated according to speed, load, heat generation and grease life. For small-angle oscillating motion, verify that the movement and lubricant can adequately protect the loaded raceway zone.
Applications involving low temperature, clean environments, vacuum conditions or unusual chemicals require separate evaluation of grease, seals, materials and surface treatment.
Overfilling may increase torque and temperature, while insufficient or unsuitable grease can reduce bearing life.

XV40 Frequently Asked Questions
Is XV40 designed for a 40 mm shaft?
XV40 has a nominal 40 mm bore. The final shaft dimension and fit must follow the approved bearing and installation drawings because the required fit depends on load, rotation, accuracy and assembly method.
Can XV40 replace XV30 without changing the housing?
No. XV40 has a larger bore, outside diameter, shoulder dimensions and fixing-hole pitch circle. The shaft, mounting surface and bolt pattern must be redesigned or verified.
How should the 12 outer-ring screws be tightened?
Install all screws loosely first, then tighten them gradually in a diagonal or crosswise sequence. This distributes clamping force more evenly and reduces the risk of outer-ring deformation.
Is XV40 suitable for an oscillating robot joint?
Yes, provided the load, moment, oscillation angle, reversing frequency, preload and lubrication are correctly evaluated. Very small oscillation angles or long stationary periods under vibration may require special lubrication measures.
Does VSP preload always improve positioning accuracy?
No. Preload can improve rigidity and reduce internal play, but excessive preload increases torque and heat. Housing accuracy, reducer backlash, shaft deflection and servo control also influence positioning performance.
When should XV50 be selected instead of XV40?
XV50 may be more suitable when higher load ratings are required and the design can accommodate a 50 mm bore, 100 mm outside diameter and 17 mm width. XV40 is preferable when a 40 mm bore and 15 mm width are required.
Can the XV40 outer ring rotate?
Outer-ring rotation may be possible, but screw loading, balance, speed, lubrication, cable forces and mounting rigidity must be checked for the actual operating conditions.
Which inspection items are important for a gearbox output support?
Important items include mounting-hole position, bore and outside-diameter accuracy, radial and axial runout, rotational torque, clearance or preload and the relationship between the raceway and mounting datums.
Is a locknut torque value sufficient to set the preload?
No. Thread friction, lubrication and surface condition influence locknut torque. The installed clearance or preload should be verified through an approved torque, displacement or direct measurement procedure.
Are XV40 suffixes identical for every bearing manufacturer?
No. Suffix meanings and specifications can differ. Always compare the complete drawing, dimensions, preload, accuracy, grease, seals and surface treatment when evaluating interchangeability.
